Catnip – Nepeta Cataria
This is a potent catnip that includes not only the catnip leaf, but also buds, stems, and seeds.
Nepetalactone ~
The important ingredient of nepeta cataria is nepetalactone.
Once it enters the cat’s nose, it attaches to these olfactory cells ~ sending their signals to the brain.
This “nepetalactone” is found in the plant’s leaves, stems, and pods.
The Effect ~
Cats (not kittens) can rub their heads and bodies on the herb, jump, roll around, vocalize, and maybe salivate.
This response usually lasts for about ten minutes, where their bodies adjust and become immune for at least thirty minutes.
But not all cats have this reaction
… it’s a hereditary response and only affects seventy to eighty percent of our feline friends.  Also note that kittens (up to six months of age) do not respond to nepetalactone.
